PAS ignores IGP’s warning, wants answers on Altantuya’s murder

Asking the obvious questions on the murder of Mongolian translator Atantuya Shaariibuu, PAS information chief Mahfuz Omar speaking to journalists today at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. – The Malaysian Insider pic, February 5, 2015.PAS today shrugged off Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar's warning that Malaysians should stop questioning the motive of Altantuya Shaariibuu's murder, saying that the public have a right to know the truth. The Islamist party's information chief Datuk Mahfuz Omar said Khalid's warning had only fuelled the public's suspicions over the 2006 murder of the Mongolian translator."Khalid's warning to the public not to question the motive behind the murder has raised the people's suspicions."The public have a right to know more about this high-profile case, especially as it involves Malaysia's image at the international level," Mahfuz told a press conference at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. The Pokok Sena MP said it was impossible for former police commandos corporal Sirul Azhar Umar and chief inspector Azilah Hadri to have killed Altantuya on their own accord."I am confident they did it only because they were following orders," said Mahfuz. He also wanted to know what links the duo had with Altantuya, even though it has been established that they did not know their victim.Mahfuz said he would also meet with the Australian consulate in Malaysia to learn more about Sirul's status.Sirul and Azhar were sentenced to death by the Federal Court on January 13 over the murder of the 28-year-old model in 2006.But Sirul did not appear in court the day the verdict was read, as he had reportedly fled to Australia last October.Lawyers and politicians have raised the issue of motive, which was not revealed in court, but Khalid said on Monday there was nothing more to say on the case as the court had made its decision."And I am warning those who wish to comment further because it may be contempt (of court)," Khalid told journalists. – February 5, 2015.
